There are currently three types of UCard-based door access managed on campus: residential, non-residential, and off-line. All use the 16-digit ISO (or run) numbers located on UCards (or in some cases, badges) to authorize access into buildings and rooms on campus. Each system is managed somewhat differently, and by departments independent of the UCard Office.
Residential Door Access
Residential door access pertains to the 45 campus residence halls on campus, and is managed by the Housing Card Office.
Because residential door access is not managed directly through the UCard system, there is a 1-2 hour delay before replacement UCards will work for residential door access.
For the same reason, suspending or reinstating UCards via the UCard web site or by calling the UCard Office, has no effect on the residential door access privileges associated with the UCard. To suspend or reinstate residential door access privileges, cardholders must contact the Housing Card Office at (413) 545-0194.
Non-Residential Door Access
Non-residential door access pertains to all academic, administrative, and other non-residential buildings on campus. The non-residential door access system is managed by the campus Physical Plant.
Because non-residential door access is managed directly through the UCard system, replacement UCards work immediately for non-residential door access.
For the same reason, suspending or reinstating UCards via the UCard web site or by contacting the UCard Office, will have an immediate affect on non-residential door access.
Off-Line Door Access
A number of interior doors on campus, including a number of library carrels, have been equipped with off-line card readers. Access to library carrels is managed at the main library Circulation Desk. Access to other off-line doors is managed by the Physical Plant Lock Shop.
Off-line door access is not managed through the UCard system. The only way to remove off-line door access from a lost/stolen UCard, is to get a replacement UCard at the UCard Office, have the new card encoded for off-line door access at the appropriate location (Library Circulation Desk, or Physical Plant Lockshop), and then use the newly encoded replacement card at the off-line door itself. Once this is done successfully, the lost/stolen card will no longer work at that location, only the newer replacement card.
